Hi there! My name’s Yusuf Ismail Bin Shukor.
I have a strong interest in Ubuntu, and Linux as a platform for developing games. With the advent of Steam for Linux, I’m even more excited now than ever. I hope to share my findings and experiences as I journey along my path to further comprehend game development as a whole here.
My experience in coding has been stretched quite a bit, and thus I feel I am more a jack of all trades and a master of none. I’ve played with and delved into C, C++, C#, Flash’s Actionscript, a bit of Lua in LOVE2D, Javascript for Unity, and most recently GML for GameMaker Studio. With that said, I am most familiar with the following:
- Unity 3D (hands-on since 2012)
- C# (both Unity3D and XNA)
- C++ (mostly CLI applications, touched on Allegro/SDL/SFML back in the day)
- Unreal Engine 4 (Blueprints mostly, lightly touched on C++)
I also happen to have some knowledge and experience in using Blender and Maya for creating 3D models and texturing them with 2D textures made in GIMP, or Substance Painter. By no means though am I an artist.

Steam->Dota2 fps drops || Advice || opinion || much appreciated…
Saw few of your videos on yt and wanted to ask you about Bumblebee experience specific for Dota 2 and Steam.
My Laptop is solid machine with this conf. all around: 17″ LG Led Display, Intel® Core™ i7-4702MQ CPU @ 3.20GHz × 8 core(Haswell mobile), 8gb DDR3 1600mhz(1 module piece, 3 dimm banks left for upgrade 8×4 max), 500gb 1st and 500gb 2nd slot hdd-s sata, Gnome Shell as environment and nvidia-370 drivers set-up over Bumblebee testing ppa.
Recently my FPS dropped a lot, even less than 30-35 fps and in big teamfights with lots of spell casted less than a 25fps which is supprising for this configuration, Linux kernel updated recently, Dota 2 updated with big patch 7.0 and my graphic driver as well so I decided to reinstall complete machine and go clean to try to diagnose the bottle-neck but I still am not sure about my Bumblebee + nvidia-370 synergy and when I do “optirun steam” it starts good, everytnihg normal untill I launch Dota 2 from Steam client, starts to load, enters the Dota 2 gui and after loading just snaps the game but console stays open as well as a Bumblebee nvidia graphics which is triggered with optirun for this purpose.
Idid some testings and “glxgears” runs with no problem, Optirun status on newly booted session looks as normal as this
“optirun –status
Bumblebee status: Ready (3.2.1). X inactive. Discrete video card is off.”
But… When I go and launch optirun for my nvidia settings in terminal:
“optirun -b none /usr/bin/nvidia-settings -c :8”
I get nonsence result for some reason, check this terminal output:
“Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
** Message: PRIME: Requires offloading
** Message: PRIME: is it supported? yes”
So I understand from this point that PATH is not good for this libvdpau stuff or it’s missing for some reason, nvidia-370 driver is freshly installed from Graphics PPA for open-source drivers(graphics-drivers/ppa). Though I will mention that I did not purge previous drivers but just picked newer one from a Software & Updates option after: sudo apt-get update and after that I did upgrade so they are populated, clicked it, apply it, reconfigure Bumblebee to use *-370 and that’s the most of it.
I guarantee for a clean system, good and stable Gnome Shell environment, also added lastly nvidia-prime-indicator-plus to see if it’s the driver itself or just a configuration missmatch with PATHs or some lost library from previous driver(*-340 or 364 I think before this one). When chosen to change graphic adapter from indicator(logout from Intel HD 4600 & login back with nvidia graphics) Steam and Dota 2 runs stable but very poor performance and FPS drop as it was before clean Ubuntu 16.04 installation today(still no problems to launch it with this kind of setup which I don’t wanna use on a daily basis and would prefer to find a workaround with the Bumblebeed launch over “optirun steam” without crash and those error msgs I posted previously “Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Don’t get the messages at all so any kind of help would be much appreciated to get things going soon.
Meantime I will try to purge nvidia packages completely and install last(newest) nvidia-375 driver or else go for a 340 proprietary one I have from canonical ppa(default one). Not sure if it supports Bumblebee but will try it anyways if new ones fail too.

From a quick glance, it seems certain that it’s the Intel HD4600 mobile iGPU that’s running your graphics which is why you get below 30 fps. Haswell graphics drivers are still very bad for performance (I own one). Since I don’t know the model of your laptop, I can’t be certain you actually have a discrete mobile graphics card. Are you sure you have an Nvidia GPU inside? Your error messages all indicate that the Nvidia GPU, if there is one, is off at all instances.
It’s been quite a while since I last dealt with an Optimus system, but there is an nvidia-prime package in Ubuntu that needs to be installed alongside the Nvidia driver for it to work. If you do not yet have that installed, I’d recommend installing it. For example, after you have uninstalled and purged your previous Nvidia drivers or changes, run the following:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-370 nvidia-prime
If this was successful, you should have the Nvidia X Server Settings program installed as well. Open it and you can change the GPU from Intel to Nvidia directly from it’s GUI. It will be under PRIME. You shouldn’t have to go through all the CLI commands you’re currently going through. I hope this helps, but as always it’s best to ask in the Ubuntu forums as they tend to have more knowledgeable individuals who know your specific problem.

it’s now over 2,5 years ago when I first started gaming on Linux. One of the reasons have been the impressions I have seen in your pinguinrecording youtube videos.
I’m a linux only gamer now and I’m wondering why you have stopped making such great linux gaming videos?
Would love to see some new content of yours. Gaming on Linux have evolved a lot since your last video in 2016. And I’m talking about nativ linux gaming.
CSGo for example is now way better on Linux then on Windows.
With projects like lutris, wine and dxvk there is a whole new level of gaming on linux available.
Please keep us updated.
